NEW: Dr. Jess master-antioxidant formulation with glutathione, full spectrum of vitamins B, C and E for liver, protection, detoxification, cellular function to optimize every aspect of your health – including immunity, digestive, mood, and skin health www.aegisformulas.com

Dr Jess believes that the body is perfect. It is the toxic terrain that we are exposed to that leads to changes in gene expression, culminating in chronic disease passed down through the generations. We often consider what we can put inside our body to heal ourselves, but forget about toxic exposures that should be avoided. Cleaning up your immediate environment can radically change your health.

Here are Dr Jess’s Common Household Chemicals You Should Avoid:

  • Cigarette Smoke (benzene, lead, arsenic, cadmium, pesticides, acetone)
  • Auto Exhaust (benzene, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde)
  • VOC’s or Volatile Organic Compounds (paints, furniture, strippers, adhesives, cleaning products, new cars)
  • Mercury – heavy metal, poison to your nervous system and not safe in any levels (fish, some vaccines, in high fructose corn syrup, emitted by coal plants, trash incinerators)
  • Cadmium (batteries, vapes, plastics, insecticides)
  • Lead (paint, dust, soil, water, old pipes, older homes built before 1978)
  • Aluminum (anti-perspirants, some cookware, antacids, skin creams, dandruff shampoo)
  • Excitotoxins (food additives that over-stimulate the brain, Aspartame, saccharin, hydrolyzed vegetable protein in processed foods/frozen dinners,
  • MSG or Mono-Sodium Glutamate and some pesticides)
  • Alcohol (overdrinking depletes protective glutathione and can lead to liver disease)
  • Pesticides and Herbicides (RoundUp Ready, chloropyrifos)
  • Carcinogens (Dioxins found in conventional tampons, radiation, asbestos, vinyl chloride to make plastics, styrene found in Styrofoam)
  • Formaldehyde (preservative, used in toners, Brazilian blowouts, paints, building materials, embalming fluid)
  • Chlorine and Chloroform (released during a hot shower)-linked to thyroid problems
  • Acetaminophen (Over the counter pain reliever, reduces levels of protective master antioxidant, glutathione)
  • Household Cleaners (acetone, benzenes)
  • Radiation (microwave, X-Rays, excessive exposure to Ultraviolet Radiation from sunlight)
  • EMF’s – ElectroMagnetic Fields that damage nerve cells and increase oxidative stress in the body. (cell phones, electric blankets, computers, TV screens)

ARE YOU OVERWHELMED YET? DON’T BE! HERE ARE SOME PRACTICAL STEPS YOU CAN TAKE TO PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR LOVED ONES.

The Healthy Home Action Shortlist

Dr Jess strongly recommends her clients, readers and patients do their own research and find what is best for them. No one can be perfect all of the time and as chemicals are ubiquitous in the environment. Be sure to read all labels and do your best. Learn the list of toxins to avoid in products, food, home, work, school and how they all end up as toxins in the human body. There are chemicals in your food, air, water, and household chemicals, as well as many of the building materials and furnishings. Knowledge is power. Use this knowledge to induce change.

Kitchen:

  • If you can’t pronounce the words on the label, or they have 5 or more syllables, it’s usually a good idea to skip it!
  • Filter your tap water. Check EWG’s online tap water quality database for local contaminants and a filter that removes them, if needed. Look up your water via your zip code here but be prepared-it’s shocking to see just how contaminated tap water is. Dr Jess recommends Berkey water filters or the Kangen water ionizer with a more advanced prefilter on it.
  • Eat organic. The sad truth is that lots of fruits & veggies are loaded with pesticides and chemicals these days. Opting for organic can ensure your greens are heartier and cleaner. Check EWG’s Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce to be sure you buy organic whenever possible.
  • Use greener cleaners. Most products on the market don’t have a full ingredient list—which makes it tough to identify toxins! Find greener cleaners at EWG’s Guide to Healthy Cleaning.
  • Choose your alcohol wisely. If you do consume alcohol, do so in moderation and choose wine, beer or liquor without additives. Nearly all USA wine and beer has herbicides. I personally avoid it and look for low sulfite, organic, biodynamic wine. Dr Jess’s personal favorite is Secco Wine Club. Use code DRJESS5 to save on shipping. For beer, try to avoid gluten and look for organic beers, otherwise, avoid them. Remember that alcohol is a poison when over consumed.
  • Avoid Aspartame, Saccharin, Splenda, Nutrasweet, & artificial sweeteners. These are excitotoxins that affect your brain chemistry. Use natural sweeteners like stevia, monk fruit, maple syrup, or xylitol instead.
  • Minimize your consumption of processed or convenience foods that contain fillers and additives – frozen dinners, canned soups, chips, and pre- packaged snack foods. Check labels and ask at restaurants to avoid MSG- an excitotoxin. Also be aware canola and vegetable oils which are used frequently for cooking in restaurants and can increase omega 6 fatty acids and inflammation in the body.
  • Buy organic food to eliminate possible herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides.
  • Avoid the use of non-stick cookware, like Teflon, as many contain Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS). Visit https://www.niehs.nih.gov/health/topics/agents/pfc/index.cfm for more information on PFAS.
  • Limit barbecued or charred food, and avoid smoked or cured meats, a source of nitrosamines, linked to stomach cancer.
  • No more plastic water bottles in yoga class, ladies! For water on-the-go, get a reusable water bottle, like stainless steel or glass option (not plastic or aluminum lined with plastic). I also recommend the Berkey sports bottle, which uses a low leeching polyethylene. Bottled water may also have its own risks, such as BPA “Plastic containers have recycle codes on the bottom. Some, but not all, plastics that are marked with recycle codes 3 or 7 may be made with BPA.” Source: www.niehs.nih.gov/health/topics/agents/sya-bpa/index.cfm

Bathroom/Laundry Room:

  • Ditch the fragrance. It’s hard to know exactly what’s in a “fragrance,” and this trade secret can contain upwards of 70 different chemicals use to invoke a familiar smell. Switch to essential oils or chemical free fragrances/lotions. This includes everything from fragranced candles to fabric softener, which can be quite toxic. Look for soy or nontoxic candles.
  • Check your toothpaste. Choose fluoride-free for kids and adults. If using fluoride, spit well as it is toxic when ingested. Fluoride is also in water and medications so is not always necessary in toothpaste. Dr Jess really loves Dentalcidin and Auromere brands of toothpaste.
  • Mind your makeup choices. Less is more. If you want foundation, concealer and more, check out theorganicbunny.com. Conventional makeup like Loreal or Maybelline contain unregulated ingredients that can absorb into the skin such as parabens and dyes.Learn more at EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database.
  • Know what is in your anti-perspirant or deodorant. Many contain aluminum chlorohydrate. Switch to a deodorant without anti-perspirant. You are supposed to sweat -it releases toxins!
  • Limit your time in the hot steamy shower, both to save water and to reduce chlorine, total tricholohethanes, and chloroform exposure, if not using a filter on your shower head. DrJess recommends the Berkey or Kangen shower systems.
  • Consider using environmentally friendly laundry detergent, laundry products, such as Branch Basics. Ditch toxic dry sheets, which contain seven toxic chemicals known to affect the nervous system. There’s no labeling system in place and these chemicals are easily absorbed into our clothes.

Living Room:

  • Be mindful of your carpeting. Be sure to opt for a formaldehyde-free carpet options. Also, circle back to the EWG’s Healthy Cleaning guide for your best carpet cleaners.
  • Filter the air in your home as needed. Dr Jess owns and recommends an Air Doctor Pro-use https://www.airdoctorpro.com/?src=affiliate&aid=62603 to save $300 on your Hyper HEPA + carbon filter. Austin Air or IQ Air are other good choices. Change out your home air and heating filters every three to six months.
  • Stop smoking (cigarettes or marijuana). The dangerous list of toxins in cigarette smoke puts you at risk, even if you are not the smoker. Avoid cigarette smoke, and if you do smoke – consider quitting for the sake of your health and those around you. Moreover, even smoking cannabis puts you at risk for carbon monoxide combustion.
  • Limit your use of the cell phone and try to reduce the time you carry it in your pocket. Turn it on airplane mode if you must carry it on you. Turn it off or leave it in the other room at night. Hardwire computers to avoid wifi or 5G, which has not been sufficiently tested but has been rolled out.

Yard/Outside Area

  • If you do have an issue with pests or insects in or around the home, garden or yard, choose a natural pesticide or organic products containing pyrethrum or neem. Or try using a mild soap solution, boiled cayenne pepper solution, or bentonite clay on the ground.
  • When using insect repellent, read the labels and avoid the ingredient DEET. You can also make your own insect repellant with essential oils.
  • Yes dry cleaning is toxic and linked to bladder cancer! Limit the amount of clothes you take to the dry cleaners, air them out before bringing them indoors, or consider using an organic or green dry cleaner.
  • Air out new cars or furniture in a garage or sunroom for 3 days prior to bringing them inside. New furniture or car smell contains volatile organic compounds.
  • Switch out your toxic household cleaners. Did you know household cleaners contain unregulated endocrine disrupters? Dr Jess recommends Branch Basics, who are fully nontoxic. If you must use bleach, be careful, wear gloves or use a non-chlorine bleach to limit chlorine exposure. Treat them as you would any other poison, and keep them out of children’s reach.
  • Do not live or work in close proximity to power lines, transformers, 5G towers, or high-tension electrical wires, whose unnatural frequencies have not been proven safe over time yet.
